Digital Declutter | How to do a digital declutter

If this is your first time to my blog then welcome! I am so happy you are here and you came across this post. If you are new I like to think of myself as the queen of decluttering and today we are talking about digital decluttering.

Often times when people think of decluttering our minds instantly go to the physical items. Things like the amount of clothes we own or the amount of toys we are stockpiling. We often overlook our digital clutter. The amount of photos on our phones, emails, notifications, applications we have but don’t use. All of these things are clutter and can easily become overwhelming.

If you are on a journey to declutter and simply your life then I want to challenge you to join me and perform a digital declutter. Take some time to audit your digital life and start removing, organizing and simplifying your digital presence. Below is a checklist to get you started.

Digital Decluttering Checklist

Close unused accounts

Think about all the accounts you have created in the past but do not use. Accounts that no longer serve you. I have made accounts just because I wanted to check out a product or get a discount. If you are not receiving emails from the companies that you have the account with then you may not even know you have that account. Out of sight out of mind. If you are receiving emails and longer need the account then go ahead and delete it.

Delete unused apps

There are thousands of applications out there that you can download. Which is amazing to have but often times we download and forget if we are not using them consistently. Take some time to review your apps and if they no longer serve you then it is time to delete them and free up that space.

Unsubscribe from email lists & newsletters

If you are like me then you receive so many of these darn emails from companies. I will not even attempt to count. Time to unsubscribe from the email lists. Personally, I have been so exhausted dealing with the hundreds of junk emails and companies constantly emailing me advertisements. So every time one comes across I unsubscribe. Some companies make it difficult to find so you may have to search. Other times I swear they never actually unsubscribe you or it takes weeks because some of them are still coming in my inbox. Either way I have noticed a big difference in the amount of emails I have been receiving.

Delete unwanted emails

Take a moment to look at your inbox. How many old emails are just hanging in that box? Many old emails are just sitting there wasting space. Take a few moments and start at the very bottom and delete all the old emails you no longer need. This will help create less stress in your life and help you feel less cluttered. If they are not important or serve no purpose then it is time to say goodbye. If you have emails you need go keep then create specific tags and folders so they are organized and easy to find.

Clear out downloads

I am constantly downloading documents and images from the internet. I download, use the document and then generally forget about it. Go through your downloads and keep what is needed and trash the rest.

Clean up and organize your bookmarks

How often have you bookmarked something and then never referenced it or you did it just in case? It is helpful to keep your bookmarks organized and simple and delete the ones that no longer serve you.

Organize and delete images

I have seen peoples phone who have hundreds of photos stored because they do not want to delete them. Personally, I upload all my personal photos to shutterfly. The service is free and I have quick and easy access to my photos. I have been using them for years and never had an issue. This is a great way to keep my photos accessible and not cluttered on my phone.

Unfriend, unfollow and clean up your social media

Social media….where do I even begin. I have been off social media on a break since September 2021 and I am loving it. How many people are you friends with on social media but do not actually talk to? That one person you worked with years ago who you talked to a few times but know nothing about them? Think about it. What purpose is it serving you? Do you really care about seeing their family photos when you don’t even know who they are. That might sound harsh but I think its the truth. If you do not talk to someone in “real” life then how are you truly friends? Just food for thought and my personal opinion. How about that influencer you are following who makes you feel about bad about yourself? Time to unfriend and unfollow that person. Go through your friend list and think about who you are following and how they are impacting your life.

Turn off notifications

This goes along with social media. Its a great idea to turn off unnecessary notifications. Think about it do you really need to be notified everytime someone makes a post? These companies make notifications to pull you back into the apps and its a waste of time. Turn them off and be more productive with your time.

There you have it 😌 these steps are an amazing way go clean up your digital life and declutter. Pick one and conquer it then move onto the next step. You do not need go complete all these steps in one day and it can be overwhelming. A little bit each day will lead you to a more clutter free, stree free life.

    Your tips for performing a digital declutter are excellent, and timely. I especially like the last one of turning off the notifications. I’ve found that this simple change has made using my phone and PC much more enjoyable. Thank you for the time you’ve spent on this post.
