Let’s normalize….being normal?!

Using social media can directly impact your mental health, emotional health and even physically. I have been there first hand and you most likely have had a similar experience. I am going to focus on Instagram in particular because it is where I am most active but all this information applies to any social media application.

When you open Instagram you are bombarded with photo shopped and heavily edited photos. Scroll through the images of perfect appearing bodies, perfect appearing lives and everyone living their best lives. People rarely will show themselves at their worst….hell people will rarely show themselves being normal. When I say normal I mean unedited or appearing unattractive. In your natural state not all done up. Today people know how to pose, their good angle and then they filter it down. It has gotten so bad that influencer’s are now selling you beauty items with filtered images! How can I know how the product works if you have a filter on? Many times I have watched videos of women applying or sharing makeup products with a filter on! Very deceitful to the viewers. Then there are the people selling teeth whiteners with filters on! It seems like everyone is so scared to show their real selves. To share how we really look and embrace being normal.

Why is it so hard for us to accept and normalize being normal? We all at points have messy hair, acne breakouts or look like we rolled out of bed. We do not have perfect bodies or perfect lives. The perfect person and life just does not exist. What does that mean anyway? What is a perfect body or the perfect life? My answer will probably be different than yours and that is okay. This can go farther with people showing they have an expensive car or a big house. Often times you will see people pose with their coffee in the drivers seat of the expensive car. I am not saying there is anything wrong with that but why is it glamorized? My answer to why is because social media is meant to make you feel like you are less. Less than a person because you can not afford that car or that house. Less than a person because you don’t look a certain way. They are trying to sell you an image and a product. Also, why does every influencers home have to have everything in white?

In the end, there is nothing wrong with people doing what they want and posting on social media. In the end we can all do what we want. I just think it would be great to see people being more normal and maybe for those people that is normal. For me though my goal is to show my normal but I will be the first to admit I am guilty. I am guilty of filtering photos, removing blemishes and editing my photos to look better. I show things I buy with the attitude of “look at me and what I can afford”. I share the highlights of my life. If you do this and this is something you want to continue doing then go for it. But for me my goal is to share my life more unfiltered and unedited. Because life is not perfect and I am a normal human being. And quite frankly I am over the filtered lies.

So, cheers to life #unedited #unfiltered #imperfect

I love that you said your goal is to share your life unedited and unfiltered. I’ve been enjoying showing my “normal” self on social media, it’s so freeing because you’re sharing your true self. I love this ❤️

I love filters but I am tired of it being the normal. I still filter things but not as much as before. I want to normalize being normal and having flaws. Imperfect lives and imperfect bodies because that’s reality. 🙌🏾 whats your instagram handle? I wanna follow you and support 🥰
